The Research Group “Architectural Project of Public Equipment”, held by the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism from the University of Sao Paulo (FAU USP), gathers undergraduate and postgraduate students, architects and professors disposed to analyze, study and research building projects with public character. It promotes a space of conviviality and exchange of information and ideas between bachelor, master and doctor researchers, professors and other interested professionals, where it’s possible and desirable to expose, discuss, question and criticize the analyzed projects and to stimulate visitations, interviews and production of texts about the themes connected to the group.

The research themes chosen by the group reinforce the intern teaching organization of the department “Building Project” from the Architecture and Urbanism course, which displays a didactic structure with specific emphasis, as shown below:

STUDIO 2 / Infrastructure / Architecture of the Site / Transpositions
STUDIO 3 / Housing / Architecture of the Construction / Modulation
STUDIO 4 / Public Equipment / Architecture of the Program / Transitions / Connections

The research has a strong link with the Studio 4 production and seeks not only the continuity of the practical praxis as an extension activity from the teaching methodology, but also the improvement from the proposed programs for the matriculated students in the subjects from the course’s fourth year. The main goals of the group are to prepare, to apply and to publish the project process as a research with the following themes: Architecture from Public Buildings, Architecture of the Program, Spaces of Transition, Studies of Architecture Programs of Buildings for Public Education, Health, Culture, Sport, Leisure and Social Assistance, with the emphasis in the articulation of the production from Research, Culture and Extension, held by the FAU USP.

The group production intends to accentuate the notion of the public building as a part of a system that relates it with the city and that suffers direct influence from the public politics involved, for instance, by the activities related to Education, Health, Sports and Culture. Some Brazilian main examples which could possibly be studied by the research group are: the web of public equipment complexes, with their character of Urban Structuring Centers; “Schools-Classroom, School-Park” (“Escolas-Classe, Escola-Parque”, Anísio Teixeira); Social Equipment Square, Unified Center for Education (“Centros Educacionais Unificafos”, CEUs); Sport and Culture Equipment Square.
